Canopus House is an elegant and spacious 1920s house set in almost two acres of private, stunning gardens. It is located near to west Cornwall's beautiful beaches at Porthcurno, Sennen and Marazion along with several hidden coves with clear blue sea for swimming. Canopus House comfortably sleeps 9 (+1), with generous living space and parking on a private driveway for 5 cars. Arranged on one floor, this spacious, well appointed home has ample space to accommodate full occupancy. A sun porch stocked with beach mats, buckets and spades leads to a large entrance hall and boot room providing ample storage space and beach towels. To the right, a door leads to an enormous open plan dining room. The dining table comfortably seats 12 guests, there is a separate children's table that seats 4. Beyond the dining area, the newly restored baby grand piano sits by a door which leads out to the reclaimed slate terrace with comfortable seating for 10 then onto the extensive gardens. The large open plan living room has a wood burning stove, three sofas, massive oak lamps, two huge indoor/outdoor bean bags, HD LCD television, DVD cinema surround system and iPod dock. The room is decorated with contemporary artwork and has views over the beautiful gardens and beyond to open countryside. The gardens themselves are divided into a number of distinct 'rooms' several of which are bordered by the stream which runs over rocks and past the lawns as it makes its way to the sea at Lamorna Cove. Tucked quietly away from the house is the yoga garden bordered by granite boulders and tree ferns where a comfortable outdoor sofa is hidden by the stream, providing a beautiful suntrap to enjoy a drink and relax. Along the stream is the children's garden with a variety of play equipment, the front lawn providing views into the wilderness areas currently under restoration (including a recently-discovered island) and through to the giants' garden, surrounded by huge gunnera plants spanning the stream. These are just a few of the areas to explore and discover and with ample garden furniture around the garden there is always somewhere secluded to lose oneself with a book or just enjoy the views.
Back inside the house, the kitchen combines a vintage feel with modern appliances and is extensively equipped for your stay. It combines separate pantry and laundry, freestanding vintage units and an island unit with bar stools, with dishwasher, microwave, Smeg range cooker with halogen hob, American fridge/freezer with ice dispenser, Gaggia espresso machine, juicer, washing machine, and tumble dryer.
The bedroom corridor offers 1 double room, a family suite with interconnecting double room and single bedroom (with cot) and en-suite wet room, a twin room, a further double/twin room and a bathroom. The wet room offers a walk in rain shower and the bathroom has a roll top bath with handheld shower. Both bathrooms offer sink, WC, heated towel rails, under floor heating and storage/baby change tables.
The property is set up to be baby friendly with extensive baby and toddler equipment provided. The baby play garden includes Wendy house, swing/slide, picnic table, balancing logs and hammock chair. Inside the house, hampers in the living room contain children's toys and the kitchen is supplied with hand blender, children's cutlery and crockery and highchairs. Both bathrooms offer baby change tables. In the bedroom corridor a walk in cupboard contains a range of equipment: 2 x travel cots, baby rucksack, play gyms, bouncing chair, potties, toilet training seats, steps, change mats, bumbo chair, bed guard rail, 2 x baby monitors, plug socket covers, microwave steriliser. As the property is all on one floor, it offers a safe and spacious environment for small children to play. The terrace and top garden adjoining the living room are fenced to prevent very young children from accessing the lower gardens and stream, although parents are
asked to supervise young children as tempting walls to climb, rabbit holes and roses are all part of a country property.
Canopus House is our recommended choice for a large family or two families seeking a spacious holiday home nestled in Cornwall's western scenery offering fantastic access to many golden sandy beaches (Porthcurno beach and the Minack Theatre, ten minutes drive), surfing beaches (Sennen beach, ten minutes drive), coastal walks, and the amenities of both Penzance and St. Ives.
I could see from the photos on the website that Canopus house was beautiful but what you can't see is the atmosphere, it is very special. It's very modern and "done up" but we felt relaxed there and happy to use everything. That's quite something. Some of my guests commented that it wasn't til they got home and thought about it that they realised how special the place was. The house was extremely well equipped-we wanted for nothing. If you have babies and young children there is absolutely everything you need. We all enjoyed it very much.
