Gems Interiors: The Masterminds of Shangri La
Amidst the rugged coastline of Polberro, in St Agnes, Shangri La flaunts all the details for a luxurious stay on the coast. This inspirational new home has been carefully designed by our in-house Gems Interiors team and reflects the tones of the everchanging Cornish landscapes beyond the holiday door. We caught up with the fabulous team to learn about their vision and process while creating Shangri La…
“We always like to meet the owners and work with them to ascertain what their hopes, dreams and personal aspirations for their new property may be going forwards – not just simply apply the formula for a successful holiday letting. This enables us to build a truly bespoke and genuine proposal. We work with the natural environment which surrounds the property, veering away from the predictable expectation of beachy, seaside or nautical, to a more considered environmentally harmonious and cerebral calm.”
Living Room
“Shangri La has a special meaning to the owners and we wanted to acknowledge and celebrate this association by bringing some subtle touches to the property to remind them of happy times spent in the Far East. Comfort and easy living were also important factors, creating enough luxurious seating for everyone to gather and make memories whilst admiring the superb location and views.”
Kitchen & Ground Floor Living
“A relaxed space for all ages to enjoy and interact, not just a kitchen/diner. We created informal comfortable areas for family to sit and chat over a coffee, or perch at the breakfast bar to learn new culinary skills from the kitchen creative. An important consideration was practicality. We specified fabrics which are easyclean, essential where upholstery is in food servery areas. Additionally, the abstract voiles provide colour and privacy. The colour scheme for the property is always a consideration to ensure cohesion and flow throughout.”
Master Bedroom
“With such an inspirational view, simplicity is key when it came to dressing the window. We used the bold green to complement and frame the breathtaking view, using texture rather than pattern for embellishment. The curtains are blackout lined for restful sleep and the sheer voiles are in place for privacy when required. A superking bed for the master bedroom is always our preference – in this instance we specified our own Cornish Gems 3000 spring mattress and divan base, with a bespoke upholstered headboard for a little colour pop.”
Bedroom Two
“As a family room, we felt needed bright colour, without pigeon-holing as a “childrens room”. We used texture in the window treatments for interest. The superking zip and link Cornish Gems 2000 spring mattresses & bed base gives practical flexibility for parents with young children or an all children room. The bespoke bunk beds also have pocket sprung Gems mattresses and bespoke upholstered headboards, to extend the usage to young adults not just children.”
Bedroom Three
“A great view is enjoyed from this bedroom on the ground floor. Drawing inspiration from the flora and fauna immediately outside, the bespoke headboard is upholstered in fabric depicting ferns, butterflies and flowers. A king size 2000 spring Cornish Gems bed is completed with a sumptuous soft quilted throw.”
Bedroom Four
“A peaceful haven with easy access for two, including some warmer shades and soft coral voiles, to complement the garden view and terrace. The fabrics, dressing table and artwork giving a nod to the east.”
Annexe
“A great space for overspill guests or for those who need a greater degree of calm and privacy. We wanted to maintain cohesion between this and the main house, but deliver a personality and individualism at the same time. The first floor living room shares the fantastic views, so we biased the seating to maximise the enjoyment of this exceptional view. The decor is slightly more loft style than the main house, but still our bespoke sofa and lounging chair for relaxation. The flexibility of superking zip and link 2000 spring Cornish Gems bespoke bed is featured with bespoke headboards, illustrative quirky-coloured furnishings and artwork, in the ground floor bedroom.
