Interestingly, the port and village of Charlestown was created and named after Landowner and entrepreneur Charles Rashleigh. It was built between 1790 and 1810 to provide a safe, deep water facility for local fishermen and the ketches and luggers trading copper ore and china clay from the mines in the St. Austell area. The exposed A-frame beams in the main bedroom have the carvers mark that date the beam and the building to 1784, indicating that the building was one of the earliest in Charlestown.
Today Charlestown is a designated World Heritage site. The harbour is Grade II listed and a prime example of a late Georgian working port and provides permanent moorings for 3 tall ships. This ancient and characterful port has visiting tall ships throughout the year and at certain times, tours can be arranged to explore these fascinating shipsÂ…you are certain to be transported into a different time! Popular with film directors, Charlestown has featured in many films including The Eagle has Landed, The Three Musketeers, Poldark and lately Doctor Who.
The nearby port of Fowey still exports clay as it did back in 1790, but with only 30-40 ships a year now in operation. With very little development in appearance through history, Charlestown has successfully withheld its charm and character.
A small selection of craft shops and galleries are scattered through Charlestown. The Pier House hotel and restaurant, The Rashleigh and Harbourside pubs are family friendly and serve local ale and delicious food overlooking the beautiful harbour and its ships all year round. Wreckers restaurant specialises in fish, while Austell's, in Carlyon Bay offers a diverse modern menu.
A must visit, is the infamous Charlestown Shipwreck, Rescue and Heritage Centre that is bursting with ocean history and artefacts including the 'Heart of the Ocean' necklace that was discovered from the Titanic and worn by Kate Winslet in the 1997 film.
The closest sandy beach is Porthpean, a safe, sandy, sheltered beach popular with families. With an array of water sports readily available, Porthpean is a great activity beach. Cleaned daily during the summer season and offering public toilets, a cafe and disabled access, Porthpean is a fantastic day out. Charlestown has two pebble beaches with plenty of rock pools when the tide is out that are perfect for the youngsters in search of scuttling crabs and darting fish or you can take the coastal footpath to Porthpean which is an easy walk from 4 The Old Smokehouse.
A gorgeous property, perfect for a small family wanting to holiday in a picturesque, unspoilt part of Cornwall.
