Hidden Cornwall itinerary: Fishing heritage and wild coastlines in Cadgwith

Tucked into the rugged edge of the The Lizard Peninsula, Cadgwith feels like a step back in time.

This is a working fishing village at heart, where brightly painted boats rest on the shingle, nets are laid out to dry and the day’s catch is still brought ashore by hand. There’s no rush here, no crowds gathering for the next photo, just the steady rhythm of life shaped by the sea.

Surrounded by dramatic coastline and hidden coves, Cadgwith offers something rare: a place that feels deeply rooted in Cornish tradition, yet quietly undiscovered.

Tips from a local

  • Best time to visit - Spring and early autumn are particularly special in Cadgwith – quieter, with soft light and a real sense of calm. Summer brings warmer seas and a little more buzz, while winter reveals the raw beauty of the coastline.
  • Swimming and snorkelling - The cove at Cadgwith is ideal for confident swimmers, especially on calm days. The clear waters also make it a great spot for snorkelling, with rocky edges attracting marine life. Always check conditions before entering.
  • Walking conditions - The South West Coast Path runs directly through the village, offering some of the most dramatic walking in Cornwall. Expect rugged terrain, steep sections and incredible views – sturdy footwear is essential!
  • Dog-friendly - The cove welcomes dogs year-round, and the surrounding coast paths are perfect for long walks. As always, care is needed near cliff edges and livestock inland.
  • Local insight - Visit early morning or at golden hour to experience Cadgwith at its most atmospheric, when the boats are still and the village feels almost untouched.

A 3-day Cadgwith itinerary

Day 1 – Coast, sea and village life

Start your day with a swim in the clear waters of Cadgwith cove, or try snorkelling along the rocky edges where marine life thrives.

Afterwards, wander through the village, watching fishermen at work and picking up fresh crab or lobster straight from the boats.

In the afternoon, join the South West Coast Path and head towards nearby coves and clifftop viewpoints, taking in the wild beauty of the Lizard coastline.

End the day at Cadgwith Cove Inn, a traditional pub with sea views, local seafood and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Day 2 – Wild coastline and iconic coves

Head out along the coast to Kynance Cove, one of Cornwall’s most iconic beaches, known for its turquoise waters and dramatic rock formations.

For a more active afternoon, explore the coastline by kayak or paddleboard from nearby locations, or continue along the coast path for uninterrupted sea views.

Stop for a relaxed lunch at Mora Beach Cafe, at Kennack Sands, known for its seasonal dishes and homemade bakes.

As the evening draws in, return to Cadgwith for a quiet night – perhaps cooking with locally sourced seafood and enjoying the view from your retreat.

Day 3 – Exploring further afield

Begin with a visit to Lizard Point – the most southerly point in mainland Britain, where the coastline feels raw and elemental.

For lunch, we recommend Wavecrest Cafe, an award-winning cafe, renowned for its seasonal produce and incredible sea views.

From here, take a walk towards Church Cove, a quieter, tucked-away beach with historic charm and fewer visitors than nearby hotspots.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider snorkelling again back at Cadgwith or nearby coves – the clarity of the water and rocky seabed make this one of the best areas on the Lizard for it.
