Hidden Cornwall itinerary: Woodland and coastal paths with Tehidy & North Cliffs
Stretching between the wooded tranquillity of Tehidy Country Park and the dramatic Atlantic edge of the North Cliffs, this part of Cornwall offers something quietly different.
It’s a landscape defined by contrast – sheltered woodland trails that open suddenly onto vast, windswept clifftops. One moment you’re walking beneath ancient trees, the next you’re looking out across the endless sea.
Unlike Cornwall’s more built-up coastal areas, this is a place for space and stillness. No busy beaches or crowded promenades – just miles of walking routes, hidden coves and raw, ever-changing scenery.
It’s one of Cornwall’s most rewarding areas for those who like to explore on foot, where every turn feels like a discovery.
Tips from a local
- Best time to visit - Late spring through early autumn offers the best balance of wildflowers, long walking days and calmer coastal conditions. Autumn is particularly beautiful in Tehidy Country Park as the woodland turns golden.
- Swimming conditions - This stretch of coast is wild and exposed, with no lifeguarded beaches directly along the cliffs. For swimming, head to nearby sheltered spots such as Portreath or Hayle when conditions are calm. Always check tides and surf forecasts.
- Walking conditions - Exceptional year-round. Expect forest trails in Tehidy and rugged, sometimes steep coastal paths along the North Cliffs. Proper footwear is essential, especially after rain when paths can be muddy and uneven.
- Dog-friendly - Very. Tehidy Country Park is one of Cornwall’s best dog-walking spots, with miles of woodland trails. The coast path is also dog-friendly year-round, making this a brilliant destination for four-legged adventures.
- Local insight - Start your walk in the woods and finish on the cliffs, or vice versa. The transition between the two landscapes is what makes this area so special.
A 3-day North Cliffs & Tehidy itinerary
Day 1 – Woodland wandering & local flavours
Begin in Tehidy Country Park, exploring its network of lakeside and woodland trails. This is one of Cornwall’s largest green spaces, perfect for a slow morning walk.
Stop for coffee at Tehidy Woods Cafe, a relaxed spot surrounded by trees.
In the afternoon, head towards the coast for your first glimpse of the North Cliffs. Finish the day with dinner at a local pub near Portreath or Porthtowan, both known for relaxed, coastal dining. Our favourite is The Atlantic Cafe and Bar, known for its loaded fries and slushy cocktails.

Day 2 – Clifftop walks & coastal discovery
Today is all about the North Cliffs.
Walk sections of the coast path between Portreath and Godrevy, where dramatic cliffs drop to hidden coves and open ocean views stretch endlessly.
Stop at Basset Cove, a tucked-away, perfect for a quiet pause away from the main paths.
For lunch, visit North Cliff Dairy for simple, locally inspired goodies and one of their delicious ice creams.
In the evening, head slightly further afield for a refined dinner in St Ives or nearby coastal towns, where Cornwall’s dining scene comes into its own.
Day 3 – Slow mornings & hidden corners
Ease into the day with a gentle walk back through Tehidy Country Park, or revisit your favourite coastal stretch for a final wander.
For something indulgent, consider a nearby spa experience in West Cornwall or a private wellness treatment arranged through your accommodation.
Spend your final afternoon exploring small farm shops and local producers inland – this area is known for excellent dairy, baked goods and seasonal produce. Trevaskis Farm in Connor Downs is perfect for this.
If time allows, detour to the nearby Mutton Cove and spot some seals, before heading home.

This is Cornwall at its most elemental, where woodland and coastline exist side by side, and where the simplest days often feel the most memorable.
From shaded forest walks to cliff-edge horizons, North Cliffs and Tehidy offer a slower, more grounded way to experience the coast.
A place to walk, breathe and explore, at your own pace.
