Elegant and Eco-Conscious: Alta, Constantine

Follow the winding verdant green lanes through south Cornwall and arrive at the tranquil natural oasis of Alta, an extra-special home where halcyon holiday days are re-captured and lasting memories are made. Set in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, high above the Southwest Coastal Footpath and the shimmering creeks and inlets of the Helford River, the gateway to The Lizard Peninsula, Alta includes five beautiful bedrooms, four contemporary bathrooms and offers generous social spaces. This wonderful home also offers smaller occupancies, including an options for Sleeps 2 and Sleeps 8, ideal for a quieter retreat.

From your holiday door, the unspoilt magic of Cornwall awaits with Port Navas and Helford Passage a short drive away and the larger maritime town of Falmouth just waiting to be explored, just a 10 minute drive to the beaches of Maenporth, Swanpool and Gyllyngvase which are dog-friendly part of the year.

We caught up with Martin, the owner of Alta, to hear about his love of Cornwall and how that’s been carried through into his vision of Alta…

Tell us about you and what attracts you to Cornwall, and more specifically to Alta’s area?

We’re in our sixties now, but young at heart and have been coming to beautiful Cornwall for 40 years – first for diving, then with family for beach holidays. I also learned to sail here and have been doing so since my 30’s. Finally, we came in search for our perfect house/holiday let, which is what led us to Alta.

What do you recommend most to guests in the area?

Walking along the coastal footpath is stunning, especially to Kynance Cove, which has been voted in top ten beaches worldwide. We recommend stopping off for a bite, or a high tea, along the way, at the Meudon Hotel. We also love taking trips to St Mawes by ferry, which is a short, but beautiful journey. Additionally, Port Navas Yacht Club is just down the road from Alta, which promises amazing food for a cosy lunch or dinner. Finally, Trebah and Glendurgan Gardens, moments away from Alta, are a wonderful day out, especially during spring and summer.

What stood out to you about Alta and what was the potential you saw in the property?

The potential of Alta is two fold – a holiday let and, one day, a forever home for us. The views from every single window are so special and the gardens are spacious, with different areas for guests to relax or play. We were intrigued by the seclusion and tranquility that Alta offered, which is perfect for family and guests. Better yet, it’s situated in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and sits 15-20 minutes from the beaches, eateries and shops of Falmouth.

Tell us about the inspiration behind the interiors and garden.

We wanted the inside to reflect the outside, using subtle choices of colour, that allow an abundance of light to come into the house and make the most of the large internal spaces. The garden is a haven for nature of all kinds, ideal for budding botanists or outdoor-enthusiasts. Whilst sat moments away from Polweveral Creek, the garden draws attention towards the sparkling water, which looks best at high tide during the sunnier seasons. The orchard is perfect for afternoon picnics, whilst the large lawn area is ideal for croquet, yoga, pilates, badminton, football or frisbee.

How would you spend your perfect stay at Alta?

When we visit Alta, we love to get up early, to enjoy a breakfast on the sun-drenched terrace. After this, we go cycling, walking or even take the kayak out, then finish off the afternoon with a picnic on the beach. Alternatively, a trip to the nearby town of Falmouth, for a pub lunch and wander around is a great day out. We love to finish off the day in the hot tub at Alta, with champagne to hand, whilst admiring the starry night sky.

What makes Alta an experience like no other?

Everything in the property was so carefully curated, ensuring the ultimate comfort, with large and relaxing interiors, so that guests have everything they may need for practicality and entertainment. One minute you’re recovering from the stresses of everyday life, soaking up peace and tranquility, sipping on wine with friends, then the next you’re experiencing a stunning hike along the nearby coast paths, or visiting the bustle of the historic town of Falmouth. From the Roseland Peninsula, to Sennen Cove and Land’s End, everywhere in Cornwall is within reach, including the enviable north coast.
