The Linhay’s Legacy of Comfort and Calm

A beautifully designed barn conversion nestled within the quiet, rural hamlet of Engollan, on the north Cornish coast, The Linhay (pronounced “Linny”) was originally a cowshed, and known to be one of the farm buildings for Great Engollan Farm, boasting unique features from the original build. The well appointed country-styled kitchen is a tempting space to get creative and enjoy some of Cornwall’s finest ingredients for a local feast. At the far end of this wonderful space, the sitting room resides with a picturesque inglenook fireplace and traditional wood burner, surrounded by comfy seating, for your post-beach walk cup of tea.

Perfect for:
🌊 A base to enjoy family adventures along the rugged coast of North Cornwall

🍻 A group of friends or couples who want to explore more of Cornwall

Owner Hilary, and her family’s Cornish Heritage

Our family has deep roots in Cornwall, with my father’s side hailing from this picturesque region. Cousins and even my sister’s children were born in Cornwall. In 2005, my son made the move to Cornwall, and soon after, his own children came into the world here. Recognising the importance of having a central haven to gather and create cherished memories, we made the decision to find a home from home in Cornwall.

In 2007, we found our perfect retreat – The Linhay – a place that has become synonymous with love, laughter, and the embrace of Cornwall’s beauty. Nestled off the beaten track, The Linhay offers a tranquil escape away from it all. Despite its secluded charm, the property is conveniently situated close to multiple beaches, country walks, and popular tourist spots, providing the best of both worlds.

Our vision for The Linhay was to create a home away from home, a sanctuary of comfortable luxury. The property boasts unique features, including spacious open-plan living filled with natural light, a hot tub for a truly relaxing experience, and an attractive enclosed garden designed with children and dogs in mind. With all living spaces on one level and ensuite facilities, The Linhay exudes a welcoming charm, complemented by thick stone walls and beautiful granite stone pillars at the garden openings, adding a touch of timeless elegance to our Cornish haven.

Creating a rural retreat like no other

The Linhay is a beautifully designed home, celebrating and boasting beautiful original features, whilst enjoying a modern twist. As one of the original Gems Interiors projects led by Sam Teague, Cornish Gems’ Owner Liaison and Portfolio Consultant, she says:

We wanted to create a brand for The Linhay that relates to its location and history of being part of the Great Engollan Farm. We wanted to make the interior interesting and captivating by adding plenty of colour, pattern and nature references. The aim was to make The Linhay memorable for guests and also be inviting all year around. The property is brilliant for families of young children as the property is all one level and the garden is secure. To be sustainable we kept a mixture of the existing furniture and updated key pieces to refresh the look. We reused some existing artwork and re-positioned around the property.”

Escapes to Engollan

Whilst many venture to the beauty of Cornwall for the warmer climate, iconic coastal path, charming harbour towns and golden sand beaches, there’s something to be said for the rural parts of Cornwall. Engollan, one of Cornwall’s quietest hamlets truly provides a sense of serenity and a space to be you again. For enough from the madding crowds, but close enough to the buzz of Padstow and beauty of the Seven Bays, you get the best of both worlds from The Linhay.
